Using a Debt Consolidation Company

Being in debt can be an extremely stressful time. Most likely you are being asked to make payments at times when you cannot - just adding to your stress. Also, you may not know the best way to go about repaying your debt. If this sounds familiar, the time may have come to call in the services of a debt consolidation company.

Basically a debt consolidation company will provide you with professional solutions to your current debt management woes. As a professional financial planner, they should:

  • sit you down and discuss your current debt levels and to who you owe the money to;
  • determine what your income and assets are;
  • come up with a plan for you to repay your debt.

In doing all of these things, the consolidation company should be in a position to talk things through with your creditors on a more equal footing, so that everyone has a more realistic understanding of the chances of being repaid. They should also be able to negotiate with your creditors to:

  • reduce the interest you are paying;
  • extend the terms of your debt repayment;
  • reduce the burden of your monthly repayments.

Assuming your debt consolidation company, your creditors and you can come up with a compromise agreement for you to repay your debt, then you will then to make monthly payments to your financial planner at the consolidation company who will then arrange to make repayments to creditors on your behalf.

As you might imagine, although many debt consolidation companies advertise that they are 'not for profit' organizations, in most cases they do need to make a living and so will either charge you or your creditors a fee for the consultation they have given you and the repayment plan they have arranged. For this reason it is always a very good idea to check-out the reputation of the debt consolidation company, and the fees (if any) they are going to charge, before agreeing to use their services.
